In 1980, we moved to Chicago so I could teach for a quarter at the Northwestern University School of Management. Before returning to DC, we decided we should head west to vacation in the Rocky Mountains. Here I am on a hike in Yellowstone National Park. The vacation was a first time in the Rockies for both of us and we had a fabulous time.
In 1989, my life changed dramatically with the birth of our daughter Madeleine. After spending many years claiming not to want children, I found myself turning into a standard-issue besotted father. This picture reveals the dignified delight I now took in my new status. The back yard is Terry Fortune's, in Potomac Maryland.
In 1991, shortly after the birth of Toni, we moved to the New York area so I could go to work for Rick Trepp. Rick had snagged a contract to provide consulting services to the FDIC who was trying to dispose of a large portfolio of mortgage loans acquired from failed banks. Here I am with Toni on the Leatherstocking Trail, which runs behind our house in Larchmont.
Me with Toni.
In 1996, we took a spring vacation with the girls and our friend Joanne Fortune to St. Lucia. Apart from a little sunburn, everyone had a great time, but Madeleine has not yet learned that you have to watch out for monsters in the pool.
Another passion of mine emerged in the 1990ies - rock climbing. For most of my life, my mind was very clear on this issue - I have a great fear of heights and not a whole lot of upper body strength, so I avoided technical climbing like the plague for years. Then, after my buddy Rick tried it and loved it, I decided reluctantly to give it a try. To my astonishment, I discovered on my first time out that I love it - the need to assert control of the mind over the body, the planning several moves ahead, the delicate balancing act. Here I am on Canon cliff in New Hampshire.
In 2000, the family went on a trip to Spain for 3 weeks in the summer. I loved the cool, elegant Moorish structures that are still standing from the Moorish occupation which ended around the 17th century in southern Spain. This pic is taken in the Alcazar in Seville. For nauseating detail about this trip, see the link on the home page.
Our vacation in 2001 was a tour of the American Southwest. We flew to Las Vegas and drove out to the Grand Canyon. The rim was spectacular but crowded, as advertized. Hiking into the canyon was fun for me but the girls didn't enjoy it. Finally, we hit paydirt taking a one hour flight that didn't tax our delicate constitutions but yielded totally awesome views of the canyon. This pic taken by Tony the pilot, so named to distinguish him from Toni the passenger.
After the Grand Canyon, we went on to Lake Powell for some boating and then circled around Bryce and Zion National Parks. Finally, we returned to Las Vegas for a couple of days before going back home. Here I am with Toni having a romantic dinner a deux at Bally's where we stayed.
In the fall of 2002, I went with Bobby Hughes, Joe Jack Davis, Laura Greenberg and Ron Dionne for a 10-day hike in the Olympic Mountains - spectacular and truly memorable! Here we are on the top of Mount Kimta, with Mount Olympus in the background.
